This will be an ongoing log of how many times we experience red tide on LGI and in the surrounding county waters. Plus now an ongoing log for the rest of the USA. The log will start on the present day and work to previous days. We've been experiencing red tide consistently for years out here, now this will show how often we feel or see it.

The red tide foam comes rolling in. Anyone ever study the toxins and levels of toxins in this stuff? It makes the sand hard and crunchy, does this leave high levels in the sand and grasses? A dog with it's nose in this stuff would be getting direct injection into it's system. Want to swim in this stuff?

Red tide foam.

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
A red tide bloom remains along coastal and offshore areas of southwest Florida. The coastal extent of the bloom ranges from Honeymoon Island (Pinellas County) along the north to Redfish Pass (Lee County) along the south, which indicates a southern expansion of the bloom compared to last week’s report. Concentrations of K. brevis have fluctuated over the past several weeks in most areas. The offshore benthic mortalities and associated fish kills reported last week from Tarpon Springs to Sarasota have been under intensive investigation this week (additional details and background information are provided in the article Offshore RedTide-Associated Mortalities and FWRI Event http://research.myfwc.com/features/view_article.asp?id=25276

Report March 28th, from Sandy Roland on Venice Beach.. no sign of red tide, but still the smell of dead fish.. she's keeping her dog out of the water.

March 13 2005 The west coast of Florida is having a bad time with the red tide, WE are all getting very sick from this exposure.  If you live on the water you know what is going on . No one that lives on the water can go outside, work outside without problems or stay outside. Our systems cannot take anyomore, WE even cough inside our own homes. The fish that survive the first onslaught still have a buildup of red tide in their systems, as the redtide continues the fish build up more in their systems, the dolphin, birds and Humans eat these, then get sick. Example, manatees and dolphins have to come up and breath in the red tide waters to live. If we had to sit at water height and breath that air would we still be alive? Probably not.

March 13, 2005, Little Gasparilla, Boca Grande, Englewood, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Cayo Costa, Capitiva, Upper Captiva, Sanibel, Charlotte Harbor, all have been affected for 5 weeks from red Tide. It will not go away..

August 2nd, nothing in sight.  We've had many inches of rain in the last week and we'll see if we get a redtide bloom from all of the runoff.

Two large algae blooms spotted: July 1st. One north of the keys in the Gulf. Another up in the Big Bend area in northern Florida.

Liz Carson
Marietta .Ga
I was in longboat key the last week of Feb. I have been seriously ill since then with all the symptoms.  The resort was cavalier in explaining after three days'  exposure that it was "red tide" but  not elaborating further and not posting beaches etc.  I read on cnn that 50 dolphins have washed ashore.  where?  what can I do to help myself recover and what can I expect?  Is it possible that my car, parked on the beach, still has toxin in it.  I seem to get worse after driving anywhere.

Feb 17th, Seems to be from Manatee,Sarasota down past Charlotte Harbor. Everyone is complaining of high Irration, and respiratory distress. I have not stopped sneezing for two days.

February 8th, North wind is kicking up alot of irritants and we are still coughing.

February 7th, High concentrations north 2 miles of the island, seems to be located in Stump Pass.

February 6th, We are now feeling the red tide here. Lots of irration to the nose and lungs. No sign of dead fish

February 3rd, Seems to be off of Sarasota county.

January 13th, Red tide is off of St. Petersburg fl.

Nov. 10th, No sign of red tide, water is clear

Nov. 5th, no sign of the red tide, water is cleaner

Nov. 4th. Things are fine, water is clear, cross our fingers..

Oct 16th. Red tide is still here but not as instense.

Fish kill is light on the bay side.

Oct 14th, We're having a hell of a time here on LGI, Can't breath, lungs and throats are burning, Two reports of people with migraines, we all have to live and work in this. I'm at the computer, coughing and sneezing. Hopefully the N.winds will die down in a few days. The dogs are all sneezing and coughing. Inside seems to be just as bad as outside.

Oct 13th and 14th, Dave Valentine, Manasota Key,

Choked through the night 13th 14th with all the
symptoms of your dogs and played unco-ordinated golf both days I have to agree it's a problem! However, we looked and looked and saw no 'red tide'. My suspicion is that it is always (invisibly) there waiting for a whipped up sea and and an 'inshore' wind to get us.
Have you tried 'smog' masks? If so, do they work. Failing that I would suggest anti-asthma inhalers such as Salbutamol or beclomethasone both
for humans and animals.
Next year, ( I was a UK Doc) I intend to bring both cos there's no darned way I'll pay a US one $100 just for the 'pleasure' of meeting him!

Oct 13th, High concentrations off of Englewood to Boca Grande. tommorow will be bad. Reports of fish kill have started. I don't want to walk to the beach to check, I can't breath.

Oct 5th, red tide remains offshore, it can be felt slightly when the wind kicks in from the West.

Oct 3rd,

The red tide remains offshore on the Southwest coast. Right now there are no high concentrations noticed anywhere. There are sporadic pods which come and go with the winds and waves. Last week Little Gasparilla  island, Manasota key, and Englewood, in Charlotte county experienced a few days of full blown red tide, whipped up by and blown in by  the west winds.

Sept 29th, Red tide is here again. Fish kill is light on gulf side and bayside. Birds are feeding on dead and dieing  fish on both sides of the island.
